Colorado Master Gardeners Win Award for Denver City County Building Demonstration Garden
Well-earned recognition was given for five years of effort by CMG volunteers at the Denver City County Building water conservation garden. A “Showcase Garden” award from the regional Plant Select® program recognized “the creation and maintenance of an exceptional public demonstration garden.”
“This garden showcases the best perennial flowers for our region and gives the public the opportunity to see them in a unique garden,” says Carl Wilson, Colorado State University Extension horticulturist. He accepted the award on behalf of the garden’s three partners: Colorado State University Extension, Denver Parks and Recreation and Denver Botanic Gardens.
The garden was established in 2005 by Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper as a community conservation garden. The Denver Botanic Gardens designed the garden taking an old European idea of an intricate “parterre” design and updating it with water-wise plants adapted to the Rocky Mountain region. Colorado Master Gardener volunteers from CSU Extension assist Denver Parks personnel in maintaining the garden.
“The patterns of leaf color and texture add to the changing display of bright flowers creating a garden that truly is appealing in all seasons,” Wilson points out. People are encouraged to visit the garden several times a year when they are in Denver’s Civic Center to get ideas. Plants are labeled so they know what to purchase for their own landscape.
The award earned the garden a gold star on Plant Select’s® web site, www.plantselect.org, which lists seventy demonstration gardens around the state. Check the demonstration gardens tab for location details and photos.
